My daughter travelled to Syria June 2014. From what me and her father have been her and her friends’ plan was to study there. We had no suspicion what so ever that she intended to participate in IS activities.

Sarah then contacted us mid-August 2019. She told us that she had given birth to a baby girl and she sent us some photos of her. That was how we found out that she had been married. We don’t know the father of the child. Sarah seemed depressed and filled with anxiety. And we got the clear impression that she was unhappy and afraid to stay in Syria and for what could happen to her and her little daughter but she didn’t know how to escape the situation. She had problems breastfeeding but was not allowed to leave the house. Besides, she seemed unhappy in her marriage we got the impression that she was under surveillance, with no room for moving around freely and bring her daughter and herself to safety.

In the end of August 2019, she sent us a message. She told us that she had managed to escape and was now in the hool camp in the northern part of Syria. She just wanted to come home. But that is no longer an option; her residence permit has been removed and there is no future for her and our little grandchild.

Her biggest sin was youthful rashness, which led her to commit a big mistake that no one is willing to excuse. For many reasons, but mostly out of humanitarian reasons, we believe that Sarah and her little girl should be allowed to return. Now, they are in constant danger and the little one needs food and clean water.
